Bottom Line: Read ‘Em!
ELECTED and SUSPECTED are the first 2 books in Rory Shay’s ELECTED series.
In ELECTED, it’s the year 2185. Aloy turns 18 and must take her father’s place as president of the country. To do so, she must masquerade as a boy (which she’s been doing for the past 14 years), to avoid violating the Eco-Accords, 4 treaties designed to bring the world back from the brink of environmental extinction. As she struggles to lead, Aloy maintains her cover by marrying a woman, meanwhile battling feelings for the boy who knows her secret, and who is somehow connected to her country’s recent turmoil (including assassination attempts). Aloy understood leadership required sacrifice. She just didn’t realize the sacrifice might mean her life.
SUSPECTED picks up where ELECTED leaves off. While countries have maintained isolation to avoid warfare over scarce resources, Aloy learns her neighboring country has broken the Eco-Accords, 4 treaties designed to bring the world back from the brink of environmental extinction. To keep her country safe, Aloy begins breaking the rules, herself. She sanctions the use of technology and crosses the border to spy on her neighbors, all while preparing for a war that threatens to wipe out her country’s entire population.
I must be honest (I always am) and tell you these books are different from what I usually read. That being said, I’m so glad I read them. Both ELECTED and SUSPECTED contain all the elements of a good story: life-or-death situations, mysteries, secrets, romance and friendship. With her distinctive style and strong characterization and voice, the author, Rory Shay, kept me turning the pages as I read, and reading when I was supposed to be working – which always signifies a good read! Even when I wasn’t absorbed in one of the books, I was thinking about the characters – and since SUSPECTED’s cliff hanger ending, I’ve been wondering what will happen next. The third book in the trilogy, PERFECTED, is slated to release next April (seriously, I have to wait a year?!).
